Long-Term Carbon Sequestration in Pine Forests under Different Silvicultural and Climatic Regimes in Spain

چکیده
Proactive silviculture treatments (e.g., thinning) may increase C sequestration contributing to climate change mitigation, although, there are still questions about this effect in Mediterranean pine forests. The aim of research was quantify the storage biomass and soil organic carbon Pinus forests along a climatic gradient from North South Iberian Peninsula. Nine experimental spp trials were selected latitudinal pre-Pyrenees southern Spain. At each location, homogeneous area used as operational scale, three thinning intensity treatments: unthinned or control (C), intermediate (LT, removal 30–40% initial basal area) heavy (HT, 50–60%) conducted. Growth per unit expressed increment-BAI), biomass, Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) measured well sets environmental variables (climate, water availability chemical physical characteristics). One-way ANOVA Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) study on sequestration. Biomass growth higher than treatments, although differences only significant for P. halepensis. Radial recovered after all species, but it faster HT treatments. (SOC10, 0–10 cm depth) halepensis sylvestris, not nigra. SEM showed that stands studied species beneficed by thinning, recovering their quickly. resulting model explained 72% variation SOC10 content, 89% silvicultural condition (basal density) thinning. better related On other hand, characteristics did show influence over SOC10- latent variable with highest SOC10. This work is new contribution shows need forest managers integrate plantations.

Carbon Sequestration and Southern Pine Forests mary controls of the major carbon pools. We then suggest management options for increasing carbon sequestration and research needed so that southern pine forest carbon sequestration can be better quantified, predicted, and managed. Land Use: A Major Determinant Two primary forces determine land use in the South. One is economic development that gen...

Carbon (C) sequestration has become an increasingly important consideration for forest management in North America, and has particular potential in pine-dominated forests of the southern United States. Using existing literature on plantations and long-term studies of naturally regenerated loblolly (Pinus taeda) and shortleaf (Pinus echinata) pine-dominated stands on the Crossett Experimental Fo...

We examined nesting success and levels of nest predation and cowbird parasitism among five different silvicultural treatments: regenerating (3–6 years old ), mid-rotation (12–15 years old), and thinned (17–23 years old) pine plantations, single-tree selection, and late-rotation pine-hardwood stands in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas from 1993 to 1995. We monitored 1674 nests. Differences in ...
متن کاملClimatic influences on fire regimes in ponderosa pine forests of the Zuni Mountains, NM, USA
We characterized fire history and examined climate–fire relationships in dry ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests in the Zuni Mountains of northwestern New Mexico. Our findings indicate that the historical wildfire regime for the study area was typified by high-frequency, low-severity surface fires. Climate–wildfire relationships were assessed using both Superposed Epoch Analysis (SEA) and ...
